Radium Girls by Kate Moore

The newly discovered element, radium, makes headlines across the nation. From body lotion to tonic water, the popular new element shines bright in the other wise dark years of WWI. Meanwhile, hundreds of girls toil amidst the glowing dust of the radium-dial factories. The chemical covers their bodies from head to toe; these “shining girls” are the luckiest alive—until they begin to fall mysteriously ill. The brave, shining girls find themselves embroiled in one of the biggest scandals of America’s early 20th century and in the groundbreaking battle for workers’ rights that will echo for centuries to come.

According to the Star Tribune, “This troupe is aces at making the wonky wacky.” Danger will explain how this unique approach has proven to be a winning formula for getting Minnesotans excited about serious and often complex issues that face our state.
