5:15 LITERATURE–BOOK DISCUSSION

Under a Flaming Sky by Daniel James Brown
Discussion Leader: Mary Ellen Nielsen

Many of us have driven through Hinckley, Minnesota, on our way “up North.” We may know little about the great Hinckley fire of September, 1894. The author of this extraordinary tale tells a story about his grandfather’s family in the midst of the tragic fire. In addition to telling an inspiring survival story, the book traces the social, economic, and environmental causes of the disaster. Our discussion will help us think about the ways our economic and social lives are related to the environment we live in.

Living Woods: Art and Crafts in the Russian North

Speaker: Carol L. Veldman Rudie, Coordinator of Outreach Education,
Museum of Russian Art

Given the extensive forests that form the Russian landscape, wood has surrounded architects, artists, and craftspeople for centuries. Using wood as a form and the resulting woodsman lifestyle as subject matter has produced cultural artifacts in every artistic field. Exploring the way in which life in the woods has influenced art opens a perspective into an important aspect of Russian lifestyle.
