Valkommen! Our day begins at Gammelgarden Museum in Scandia, Minnesota. Gammelgarden means Old Farm in Swedish. Here visitors step back in history and experience the lives of early Swedish immigrants. Our guide will present Swedish history in the Valkommen Hus, take us on a tour of five historic buildings, and stop in the Butik Gift Shop. Lunch will be a Swedish Smorgasbord served by the women of Elim Lutheran Church.
The Franconia Sculpture Park is our next stop. We will have a 60-minute guided tour through the 20-acre sculpture exhibition. A visit to the outdoor studio will show us works-in-progress by Franconia’s artists-in-residence.
Continuing down the Moberg Trail, we will stop at Eichtens Cheese and Bison store. Shoppers will love Granma’s Barn next door!
The last stop in Chisago City is WineHaven. WineHaven is a family-owned winery that has won more than 200 awards for wine excellence. Enjoy tasting a few of their fine wines and perhaps a bit of their world-famous Stinger Honeywine (Mead).
Please join us for this touch of Sweden!

At 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, the award winning documentary, The Invisible War, will be shown at the Gale Mansion.
The Invisible War tells the stories of sexual assault victims who say the military’s command structure placed obstacles in their way when they tried to hold the aggressors accountable. The film argues that a deeply ingrained culture of male authority figures makes justice hard to find (Source).
“The Invisible War” reports, using Defense Department statistics, that more than 20 percent of women in the military have reported a sexual assault. The department estimates that about 80 percent of such assaults, which affect many men as well as women, are not reported (Source).
…But “The Invisible War,” Kirby Dick’s incendiary documentary about the epidemic of rape within the United States military, is a shocking and infuriating indictment of widespread sexual attacks on women. Such behavior, the film argues, is tacitly condoned and routinely covered up; the victims are often blamed and their reputations destroyed (Source).
Sexual assault in the military has increased 35% in the last two years. The brave women who brought their cases to court tell their stories in this film. It is compelling and informative. AAUW has been helping these victims.

On February 23, the University of Minnesota will host an Elect Her – Campus Women Win workshop and are looking for volunteers for the event. This is a good opportunity for many of us to volunteer and to learn more about this program/training.
Elect Her – Campus Women Win, a collaboration between AAUW and Running Start, encourages and trains college women to run for student government on their campuses. Elect Her acknowledges the necessity to build the pipeline of women running for office in order to diminish the long-standing political leadership gender gap. Any students who attend the selected campuses can participate in the training.
Below is the list of volunteer needs for the event. If you or someone in your Branch is interested in volunteering, please contact Anitra Cottledge at cottlead@umn.edu or Sara Pennebecker at penne048@umn.edu.
