Northern Treasure
Dr. Ed Schneider, Director, Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

Schneider will discuss the current state of the Arboretum – its collections, displays, events and programming, as well as proposed changes envisioned over the next five to eight years. The current development plan envisions improvements to the entry drive of the Arboretum, expanded parking, a visitor overflow area, and a new eastern drive that will extend the current three mile drive. Also, a perimeter deer fence will be constructed.

Several new exhibits are planned that are mission related and will enhance earned revenue. Among the new exhibits: a sculpture garden, a Chinese Garden, an outdoor performance area, a canopy walk, improvement of the icon red barn area into a Farm Garden, expansion of the Meyer-Deats Conservatory, and several upgrades to both the Snyder Building and maintenance area.

Flowers in Art
Debra Hegstrom, PhD, Senior Educator, Docent Program, Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA)

Artists throughout time and around the world have delighted in the beauty of nature, especially in the depiction of flowers. By exploring examples from the MIA’s encyclopedic collection, we will look at many ways flowers are used as representations of the natural world and artistic elements with cultural and symbolic meanings for viewers in particular times and places.
