David McDonald, Executive Director, World Press Institute and Attorney, Briggs and Morgan

McDonald will speak about the World Press Institute, a non-profit organization that has conducted fellowship programs for international journalists for nearly 50 years. The Institute has sponsored over 550 international journalists from 95 countries who come to Minnesota. The program promotes and strengthens press freedom throughout the world and fosters reporting accuracy about the United States.

The Book: A Whole New Mind by Dan Pink
A Panel of AAUW members facilitated by Jeanne Bearmon

In his book, A Whole New Mind, Dan Pink describes the ongoing value of skills–linear, sequential, and logical – which emanate from the left hemisphere of the brain. He writes that in the future, which he claims has already arrived, what will be absolutely necessary to personal and professional fulfillment and success will be the skills or aptitudes which come from the right hemisphere of the brain. These include: design, story, empathy, play, and meaning – all critical to a different way of thinking and approaching life, and as they are fused with the left brain will become “a whole new mind.”

Maintaining a Place of Solace and Faith in Tumultuous Times
Marcia A. Zimmerman, Senior Rabbi, Temple Israel, Minneapolis

Rabbi Zimmerman will describe her story–her journey to be a rabbi, her work at Temple Israel, and interfaith outreach efforts. Named one of “America’s Top 50 Rabbis for 2012” by Newsweek and the Daily Beast, she is the first female rabbi at Temple Israel and the first female rabbi to serve a congregation of Temple Israel’s size as a senior rabbi.
