NetWorks Links Parents, Families, and Communities to Prevent Obesity Among Children
Speaker: Simone E. French, PhD, Professor, Division of Epidemiology and Community Health, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota

What are the most important influences on children’s eating and physical activity? What types of childhood obesity prevention interventions focus on these influences? French’s discussion of the NetWorks obesity prevention project will address these questions. Her presentation will include a description of the target population; the influences on children; the intervention components and behavioral targets identified for the project; and a description of the lessons learned from a pilot trial. -Karen Wilkinson

The Push and Pull of Minnesota’s Immigrant Experience
Speaker: Dr. Annette Atkins, Professor of History and Flynn Professor in the Humanities at St. John’s University of the College of St. Benedict

Immigrants in Minnesota’s past and present come in all colors and languages with different backgrounds, motives, and goals. Atkins will invite us to become aware of that diversity, to understand immigrants’ varied contributions to the state, and to explore some of the tensions that have complicated immigrants’ experiences. -Martha Wilson
