RUSSIA

Come, join in a day of discovery. We will hear the inside story about The Museum of Russian Art (TMORA), which is in Minneapolis. We will explore the current political climate in Russia. We will learn about Russian culture, traditions, and celebrations. Of course, we will eat Russian cuisine. Displays will include treasures (for viewing only) from IZBA, the gift shop at TMORA. AAUW members are encouraged to bring ONE of their personal Russian treasures
to display in the coatroom.

9:30 – 10:30

TMORA: The Museum of Russian Art

Speaker: Carol Veldman Rudie, Education Outreach Coordinator

Rudie is the Educational Outreach Coordinator of The Museum of Russian Art. She will introduce us to this gem of a museum which is located in south Minneapolis. Through a chronology of its exhibits, she will share insights
into the artistic and visual history of this museum.

Current Political Situation in Russia

Speaker: Nick Hayes, Professor of History, St. John’s University

Hayes is a writer for MinnPost.com, a commentator for the media, and the author of two memoirs. He received an Emmy in 1991 for TPT’s “Television and Democracy in Russia.” Hayes, described as a Sovietologist, has spent 40+ years traveling, studying, and teaching in the Soviet Union and Russia. He will tell us about the current political environment in Russia.

Her Story

Speaker: Elena Kallevig, General Director, Russian Soul

Russian Soul is a Minnesota based non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Russian Folk culture and art. Kallevig will tell about the inception of Russian Soul, her own story of growing up in Russia, and her emigration to the United States.
