China’s Current Challenges

Speaker: Dr. Ted Farmer, Professor Emeritus, History and Global Studies, University of Minnesota; History and Far Eastern Languages, Harvard University

China’s economic development has generated a wide array of problems. This talk will offer a sketch of current controversies such as demographic shifts, overseas expansion, suppression of domestic opposition, strengthening of the dictatorship, and cult of the leader. Farmer will suggest perspectives from which we might view them.

Nail Laminated Timber (NLT): Using an Ancient Building Material in a New Modern Way

Speaker: Amado Guevara III, Senior Architect, Associate at DLR Group

Minneapolis’ new “T3” building was built using NLT construction. It is the tallest modern wooden building in the United States. Guevara thinks it is the future of urban construction. The final product has many advantages. It is as sturdy and fireproof as steel or concrete, but lighter, quicker to build, and more environmentally friendly. It stores carbon dioxide rather than releasing it.
