The average person eats more than 1,000 meals per year, and likely has been sickened by foodborne disease. Recent changes in consumer eating, food safety regulations, and genomics technology are leading to new advancements in food safety. Modern approaches to make foods safer will be presented–ranging from using natural organic antimicrobials to harnessing genomics technology.

Things happen! Some are welcome, planned, and the culmination of dreams. Other things shatter dreams, hopes, and plans. And often life is a mix of such things. In this session, perspectives on loss and grief will be discussed alongside perspectives on reasonable hope for the good and the challenging times of lives.

The Goldstein Museum of Design: Over Forty Years of Design Stewardship

Speaker: Dr. Jean McElvain, Associate Curator, Goldstein Museum of Design, University of Minnesota

McElvain will provide insight into how a focused group of objects collected by two professors in the early twentieth century grew to a collection of over 32,000 objects today. Through photographs of a variety of collection pieces, McElvain will show how objects are used in contemporary exhibitions and learning environments.
