Nanotechnology:
What Is It and What Can It Do for Me?

Speaker: Deb Newberry, Instructor in Nanotechnology, Dakota County Technical College

The atomic structure of any material defines its properties. Scientists can now study materials at the atomic level–that is nanotechnology. Engineers are using this newfound information to create stronger, but lighter weight materials, better sensors, and earthquake proof buildings. Examples of research areas and product development in the areas of electronics, coatings, diagnostics, and more will be discussed. Newberry will make nanotechnology come to life.

10:45 – 11:45 AUTHOR, AUTHOR

Story in Film, Politics, Business, and Life

His presentation will explore how the narrative form grew out of our brain structure and how it can be used as a guide to living a more dynamic and fulfilling life.

Preventing and Treating Pain in Children

Speaker: Stefan J. Friedrichsdorf, MD, FAAP, Medical Director, Department of Pain Medicine, Palliative Care, and Integrative Medicine, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota

Millions of children needlessly suffer from pain in our country each year. As medical director of the largest program of its kind in North America, Dr. Friedrichsdorf will discuss common pain experiences in children, such as needle pain, chronic pain–often from headaches, migraines, chronic abdominal pain, or fibromyalgia–and acute pain, which could be from an accident or cancer. What can be done to prevent and treat them successfully?
