Public Health and Public Policy: Choices to Make or Break Our Future
Speaker: John R. Finnegan Jr., Professor and Dean, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota
It is tempting to think that headline-grabbing advances in medical science will be the most important factor shaping a healthier future. Instead, that distinction belongs to public health, public policy, and the collective action of communities and nations. This is about creating a culture of health that shapes the “big picture” of how health and well-being should be sustained and enjoyed by all, not just those who can pay for it. Shall we choose wisely?
10:45 – 11:45 THE ARTS
Sculpting a Life
Speaker: Nick Legeros, Sculptor
Every artist is asked, What is your favorite piece that you’ve created? Legeros’ mentor, Paul Granlund, would always answer, The next one. While he agrees with Granlund that the next sculpture is always full of possibilities, he’s come to believe that the sculpture he favors most is his life. He sees no lines between his occupation and his being. Nor does he perceive himself as different from anyone else in this world. He hopes his perspective may be helpful to see work, the world, and your life as intimately connected.
