Speaker: Karen Melvin, Author and Architectural Photographer

Melvin will describe how she turned her lens on elegant St. Paul houses designed by distinguished architects in order to produce this, her third book. Her colorful photos will give us a peek inside these historic houses and her talk will introduce us to the remarkable individuals who are preserving the original grandeur of their homes.

Monarch Butterfly Ecology

Speaker: Dr. Karen Oberhauser, Professor, Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology, University of Minnesota

Dr. Overhauser has spent her career studying monarch butterflies, which face peril wherever they live. This includes the northern areas in the summer, during spring and fall migratory journeys to Mexico, and the over-wintering areas of that country. Diminishing populations have been observed by both the scientific and lay communities. There is hope for a reversal of this trend.

Update on the Implementation of the Affordable Care Act

Speaker: Lynn Blewett, Professor of Health Policy and Management, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota; Director, State Health Access Data Assistance Center (SHADAC)

Dr. Blewett will provide an update on implementation of President Obama’s signature health reform program with particular attention to the Health Insurance Exchange or MNSure in Minnesota, the expansion of the Medicaid program, and the impact on health insurance coverage in the state of Minnesota and the nation.
