9:30 – 10:30 Presidents’ Hall OUR PLACE IN THE WORLD

Latin America: A Region of Ever Changing Politics

Speaker: Dr. Gary Prevost, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University

Forty years ago the region was dominated by military dictatorships and violent civil conflicts. Today it’s dominated by political democracy. The region’s longest civil war, in Colombia, was recently ended through mediation headed by Cuba. In the early 2000s political parties of the left won almost every election. Recently parties of the right have won as disappointed electorates chose a new political direction.

Security threats that specifically target our nation’s critical infrastructure will be discussed with a focus on the Dark Web, the Internet of Things, phishing, and Wi-Fi attacks.
