I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai Discussion Leader: Beth Montgomery
When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, Yousafzai spoke out. She refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. When she was 15, she was shot at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive. Since her miraculous recovery, she has become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest winner ever of the Nobel Peace Prize. Impact of Title IX: University Marching Bands
Speaker: Elizabeth (Betsy) McCann, Assistant Director of Bands/Director of Marching and Athletic Bands, University of Minnesota
Women were barred from participating as members of large university marching bands until the passage and implementation of Title IX legislation. Women were admitted to the marching band at the University of Minnesota in 1972. Joining the university in 2016, McCann is the first female director of a marching band in the Big Ten Conference. McCann will share her story.
