PEOPLE OF MINNESOTA: Eat Well and Stay Well: How Ancel and Margaret Keys Sold the Mediterranean Diet

Speaker: Sarah Tracy, PhD, Associate Professor of Honors and the History of Medicine and Director, Medical Humanities Program, University of Oklahoma

Tracy will discuss the collaboration of Ancel and Margaret Keys on their internationally bestselling cookbooks Eat Well and Stay Well (1959) and Eat Well and Stay Well the Mediterranean Way (1975). She will also portray “the other Ancel Keys,” who advocated for heart health through the popular promotion of healthy dietary patterns, while savoring the daily rhythm of life in southern Italy with his family and research colleagues. -Carrie D’Andrea and Mollie Keys

This program, based on the last lecture of Randy Pausch, professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, was indeed, a last lecture. At age 45, this bright, decent, and loving man was terminally ill. The lecture, fleshed out in a book written for his wife and very young children, is full of living with zest, grace, and humor.

MOTHER EARTH: Frac Sand Mining: How it Impacts Rural Communities

Minnesotans are learning from neighboring Wisconsin that frac sand mining is a controversial issue affecting the economy, the environment, and communities. There is a movement in Minnesota responding to local frac sand mining.

Minnesota has laws that give authority to local governments to set standards for frac sand mining. Since the Minnesota legislature will be in session at this time, King will provide action steps individuals as voters can take which will impact Minnesota. -Pat Soulen and Kay Kessel
