Ojeda-Zapata writes on technology for various venues including Pioneer Press, TwinCities.com, a media news group, and on a blog. He will share some of his favorite software, gadgets, and apps which help to bring together journalism, technology, and social media. Public Policy: Blueprint for Safety Response to Domestic Violence: Ask to Help

Speaker: Bob Olson, Coordinator of Blueprint for Safety Project, Cornerstone Advocacy Service

Cornerstone has been working with various police departments in identifying changes needed to enhance the safety of domestic abuse victims. We will learn about the Lethality Screen for First Responders, a victim-centered approach based on the Blueprint for Safety program. He will also speak about a new program, Ask to Help, which is designed for those not working in the criminal justice system. It helps them to learn how to approach families, friends, co-workers, and others in the community where domestic abuse is suspected. -Susan Rosenberger

Education: School Safety and Security: Preparedness and a Positive Climate

Speaker: Jason Matlock, Director, Office of Emergency Management, Safety, and Security, Minneapolis Public Schools

After recent school shootings, safety and strategies to protect our schools have moved to the forefront of education and public policy. Jason Matlock will speak on multiple aspects of school security: the changes, the challenges, and the budget impact. Although unable to tell all the “secrets of security,” he will share how schools maintain a positive, safe climate and what procedures are in place. -Diane Boruff
