Learning to See: Design and Design Thinking
Speaker: Brad Hokanson, Associate Dean, Research and Outreach, College of Design and Professor of Graphic Design, University of Minnesota

The first skill of a designer is the ability to see, not merely in the visual sense, but rather in the perceptive sense. Designers seek to see the true essence of a problem, and subsequently they seek to visualize possible solutions and to see the future. This presentation will address the broader area of design thinking and center on “learning to see,” the core of education of all designers. The presentation will present a broad view of design and design thinking, building a foundation for a broader understanding of the field. -Karen Rowley

Architectural Performance Through Multiple Measures of Design Success
Speaker: Julie Snow, FAIA, Julie Snow Architects, Inc. (JSA on Facebook)

Architecture is evolving beyond ideological debates into a moment of great freedom and exploration. We regularly engage issues such as architectural use and function, spaces that enhance social interaction, energy and sustainable design performance, durability and robust construction, and architecture performance with its physical, social and cultural context. Snow will present work demonstrating architectural performance through multiple measures of design success. -Mary DeBruin
